This activity explores what happens to measures of center and spread when outliers are introduced and when sample size varies. Students begin by looking at the mean, median, range, and quartiles of a sample from a neighborhood in a town.
Students then modify one of the data points in the set to determine the effect it has on the statistics for the list. They will compare the statistics and the box plots.
Then, students explore the salaries of the entire town, compare them to the neighborhood, and determine if the neighborhood is representative of the town.
